Knives Out

FILM REVIEW

As most of you will know with this pandemic, going on the cinemas have not been that easy to get to. So, I have taken the opportunity to review an Amazon Prime movie. I realise not everybody has Amazon Prime, but you can't get this movie through other means either by buying as a DVD or renting it or whatever floats your boat. The movie I have chosen is ‘Knives Out’.

Knives Out is an incredible movie which is a modern take on a classic whodunit. It brings together a very modern world of iPhones, fast cars, Starbucks into a house which is very 17th century and very classic. The family is very traditionally dressed and it just makes your mind turn when every so often you change into different dimensions from modern to past which is very clever and very enjoyable throughout the movie . The movie is based on a character Harlan Thrombley. Now Harlan is a very successful publisher and the whole family are gathered for a great evening’s entertainment and craic. The family are all trying to stay very chummy with Harlan as they all want part of his inheritance but as we see the will comes earlier than expected.

I won't give too much away as it is a mystery film but the last half hour of this movie is the best cinema experience you will get. It is so edge of your seat and so surprising throughout, it is hard to watch but it is very worth it at the end. The characters make this film, Chris Evans is unbelievable, Ana de Armas is very good, but the Gold Star goes to Daniel Craig - he is so brilliant in this film. He has a strong American accent which in the film is compared to a “KFC accent”!

This movie has a few striking points for us as Christians to note one of which is that your sin will find you out. The killer in this movie does not come to light until the very end. You do not suspect them at all but when they are caught they are full of contempt and anger that they have been caught they're not happy that they were outsmarted and that the law caught up with them. We as Christians must see that sins need to be forgiven, we need to be asking for repentance at regular occurrences to our heavenly father. The other is greed, this family is so obsessed with greed. They just want money after money after money whether they're going to jump on top of each other to get it or spill blood for it they're going to get it one way or the other. As Christians, money is not everything, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs” 1 Timothy 6:10. We see through money. There is more to life than the houses, the cars, the phones or whether or not to buy another cow! Jesus, the Son Of God was not born into a wealthy family yet he was fulfilled with everything and never complained.

This film is without doubt one of the best films I've seen this year, however there are many downfalls in it. Firstly the swearing is uncontrollable. It is not needed and it is not necessary to the plot, I do not know why directors and producers feel the need to have such a volume of bad language in the movie. One other thing would be a bit of alcohol consumption and of course the murder plot line. But looking past all of that it is a great movie to watch. Probably more for the adults but it is certainly gripping, like a game of Cluedo coming to life on your TV. This film would be a 5/5 but because of my concerns with the language I’m going to have to demote it to 4.2/5.
